Penstemon (Beardtongue)

Penstemon digitalis, or foxglove beardtongue, is a white blooming perennial increasing to 3-5 ft. tall. These bloom from late spring to mid-summer and last for several weeks. This makes a great border plant with its tall showy flowers. This is an attractive plant for pollinators and the seeds provide food for the birds in the fall. Penstemon varieties grow best in full sun. They need cut back in late fall or early spring to promote continuous growth.

Penstemon calycosus, or calico beardtongue, is similar growing and planting instructions as the foxglove. The main difference is the appearance with this variety producing pink/purple blooms. This variety can also tolerate more shade than the other varieties.
