Iris laevigata, the blue flag, blue iris, or water flag, is a flowering perennial great for rain gardens, ponds or streams. This species of Iris is native to North America, the Eastern United States, and Eastern Canada. It can grow up to 24-30 in. tall and wide. They produce as clumps that provide 3-5 bluish-purple flowers, adding the perfect pop of color. It is best in 2-4 in. of shallow standing water with full sun to part shade. They generally bloom in late spring/early summer, and prefer acidic, moist, humus-rich soil. These are very low-maintenance and deer resistant but can become invasive. They can be propagated by division from mid-summer to early autumn.
