The tiny house movement continues to expand in Australia as more people are exploring smaller house options. The interest comes from a variety of factors, including a lack of decent affordable housing for those entering the housing market for the first time as well as an interest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Australian houses are some of the largest in the world at an average of 243 square meters or about 2,615 square feet (Australian Bureau of Statistics), and the average house emits 18 tons of greenhouse gases per household.
Tiny houses come in many different sizes. U.S. designer Jay Shafer defines a tiny house as being around 9.3 square meters or 100 square feet. In Australia, Big World Homes created the first flat-pack DIY house, described as “IKEA on steroids.” It is a one bedroom, 13.75 square meters or 148 square feet, and is on a trailer. It is made from panels that can easily be put together with a drill, a hammer and a wrench.
