Resources for GA MGEVs

MGEVs respond to public demand for knowledge of how to grow fruits and vegetables by conducting projects in the Home Food Production initiative. These projects focus on teaching the benefits of home food production and developing skills and knowledge in growing food, managing community gardens, or contributing to food banks or kitchens. With MGEV instruction and leadership, community gardens can become a valuable tool for fighting hunger and poor nutrition as fresh produce becomes accessible.

To address this initiative at the Grow Strong! 2017 conference, Dr. Judy Harrison will discuss food safety for the school, community, and home gardens. Dr. Harrison is a Professor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, Dept. of Foods and Nutrition at The University of Georgia.  She serves as a food safety specialist for UGA Extension.  She is involved in training Extension Agents, conducting applied research, developing educational materials and in delivering and evaluating food safety education programs for a variety of audiences.  Her work has included curriculum development and delivery of programs on growing and selling safe produce for farmers and farmers’ market managers. She has provided food safety training for Food Corps volunteers working with school gardens through Georgia Organics.  She is trained in the delivery of educational programs to meet requirements for growers and processers under the Preventive Controls for Human Foods Rule and the Produce Safety Rule.  She is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists and the International Association for Food Protection.
