  • “Pictures show hurricane’s unprecedented damage to North Carolina crops”

    Pam Knox

    October 19, 2016

The Southeast Farm Press had an excellent slide show on damage to North Carolina farm fields caused by the flooding from Hurricane Matthew here.  Many fields were completely submerged, ruining soybeans and cotton as well as other crops.  These pictures were taken by Hyde County Extension Agent Andrea Gibbs. She credits helicopter pilot Sid Cayton of…

  • US snowfall climatology from the Midwestern Regional Climate Center

    Pam Knox

    October 19, 2016

Even though we are close to setting high temperature records today in some areas of the Southeast, climatology tells us that winter is coming (either that or Game of Thrones).  The Southeast Regional Climate Center posted a link on Facebook today to a snowfall climatology put together by the Midwestern Regional Climate Center which covers…

  • Fire weather resources for Georgia and Florida

    Pam Knox

    October 19, 2016

I’ve been getting more and more reports of fires around the driest part of Georgia in the last few weeks.  Not surprising considering the exceptional drought that has been expanding from the northwest to other parts of the state (with the except of the southeast, which has been well watered by Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew).…

  • NOAA: Monthly record warm streak ends; September second warmest on record for the globe

    Pam Knox

    October 18, 2016

    October 18, 2016

AgWeb posted an article this morning quoting a market watcher (whose name I won’t give because I don’t want to give him free advertising) saying that he wouldn’t be surprised if NOAA was putting out a La Niña watch to boost crop prices before the election.  This shows a real misunderstanding of how NOAA employees…

  • Level 3 water restrictions for Haralson County in NW Georgia

    Pam Knox

    October 17, 2016

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution posted a story this weekend about the extreme drought in Haralson County, 35 miles west of Atlanta on the border with Alabama.  The Tallapoosa River there is so low (second lowest on record) that it is now below the intake to their water plant.  I’ve heard reports that the river looks like…
