The 2017 Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day was held August 23, 2017. Over 250 people attended making this year’s field day the largest since it began. This has turned into one of the highest attended field days in Southeast Georgia and one of the largest Pecan Field days in the nation. This year more equipment was on display and a lot of companies setup booths and other displays for attendees to see.
Dr. Lenny Wells, UGA Pecan Specialist; Dr. Tim Brenneman, UGA Plant Pathologist; and Dr. Tim Grey, UGA Weed Scientist were our speakers. Topics included: Young tree maintenance, Leaf Scorch, Zinc deficiency, Disease management, Nematodes, Fruit thinning, Shuck Split, Herbicides for late season and viewing a Herbicide research trial, and a Season update
Pecan acres have continued to increase over the last few years and growers are showing they want and appreciate these educational opportunities.
The point of field days and meetings is to learn from specialists and also other growers. The more a grower can learn about the industry he’s in, the more successful his farm will be. UGA Extension has been providing a wealth of knowledge to farmers in Georgia for over 100 years and we will continue to do what we do best. Getting ready for fields days of this size takes a lot of work and months of preparing, but it’s worth it and we plan on doing it again next year.
