Recap of 2026 Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day
The 2026 Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day was a huge success. I would like to extend my appreciation to Andrew Sawyer for hosting the event this year in Appling County, and to Mr. Wilbur Murray and his family for allowing UGA Extension to hold the event on their farm, as well to the several sponsors that contributed to make the event possible. We had a huge crowd of almost 240 participants who received information on young orchard management, Pre emergence herbicide options, insect pest management, and pecan scab management.
Will Brown’s Tips for September
- Early varieties are beginning to shuck split. Prepare for harvest (mow orchard, remove debris, and service equipment; pay attention to preharvest intervals of any chemicals applied at this time).
- Continue to Irrigate strong.
- Too late for any further fertilization. Although not a bad time for Zinc applications to build up soil levels around young trees.
- Still seeing some active black pecan aphid in places, so keep an eye out, also continue monitoring for other pests (Spider mites, hickory shuckworm, stinkbugs).
- Terminate fungicide applications.
ATV Safety Day
Appling, Bacon, and Coffee County Extension Programs will be hosting a UTV/ATV Safety day for all ages. The workshop will be on September 19, 2026 from 10 am – noon at the UGA Blueberry Research Farm in Alma. The registration link is below. Call the office at 912-367-8130 for more information.
This interactive workshop combines classroom instruction with outdoor practical experience to help participants operate UTVs and ATVs safely and responsibly. Topics include Georgia roadway laws, personal protective equipment (PPE), safe riding practices, vehicle sizing, safety controls, and hands-on operation. The program includes pre- and post-assessments, breakout learning stations, and opportunities to ask questions of safety professionals. Whether you are new to UTVs and ATVs or looking to refresh your skills, this training will provide valuable information to help keep you safe on and off the roadway.
