2026 Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day

The Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day is coming back to Appling County for 2026. The field day will be held at Wilbur Murray Farms located at 224 Wilbur Rd Odum, GA 31555 on August 26, 2025 starting at 8:30 am.

The field day will kick off with fellowship and equipment demonstrations from several industries. The University of Georgia Peanut Team will then give speeches at stops throughout the orchards at Wilbur Murray Farms. Topics to be covered on our farm tour include a preemergence herbicide demonstration, a low-input fungicide timing trial, My IPM workshop tools, varieties and orchard layout, and non-bearing pecan site management.

If you plan to attend or have any questions, please contact the Appling County Extension Office at 912-367-8130 by August 19, 2026 to RSVP as this will help plan for the meal that will follow the Field Day.  Pesticide license credits provided with sign in. I hope to see you there.

Will Brown’s Tips for August

  • In August, kernel filling begins and pecan trees are in peak water demand. For mature trees, Irrigate 8-10 hours per day. Turn irrigation off for three days when receiving more than 1″ of rain.
  • Scout for leaf scorch mites. Mites favor hot and dry conditions.
  • Fungicides for scab are no longer necessary after August (once shells have hardened).
  • Collect samples of scab and send off for fungicide resistance screening.
  • Attend the Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day.

Fungicide Resistance Sampling Program for Pecan Scab (Lenny Wells)

If you would like to have the scab from your orchard screened for fungicide resistance to the fungicide chemistries used on pecan, Dr. Clemen Oliveira has provided the following protocol: Collect 10-20 young LEAVES/SHOOTS from 6-10 trees in the orchard block. Place them in a PLASTIC bag (no paper). Fill out the form at the link below and send to the address on the form:

Cost of the screen is $200
