Pecans started to break buds about 10-14 days ago and now we are starting to see a lot of green leaves on the trees. Here are a few tips from myself and i have also attached the Southeast Georgia pecan press from Andrew Sawyer for March-April.
Will Brown’s tips for April
- With the drought we are in we need to be putting some water to our trees, for mature trees irrigate atleast 4 hrs per week, for younger trees at least 3 hrs once per week.
- It is time to start fertilizing our trees, for mature trees apply 50-75 lbs of N/acre two weeks after bud break. Split your applications up in 10 day intervals add an extra 25-50 pounds of N in June or late August if you have a heavy crop.
- If you had pecan phyloxerra last year, now is the time to apply centric or imidacloprid.
- Begin fungicide sprays with a phosphite pre pollination spray.
- Apply herbicides pre and post.
