A website from UGA Cooperative Extension

On August 17 over 200 people attended the 2016 Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day in Baxley. This annual event has continued to grow and become more popular. This year, even farmers from Alabama and north Georgia attended the field day. I am always amazed at how appreciative pecan growers are of these types of events and the attendance shows that.

Many pecan growers in our area have a full time job and have to make arrangements to attend the field days and meetings. I think that says a lot when you look at the attendance of pecan meetings and field days. The growers make it a priority to attend the event. Usually, even the county pecan production meeting in the winter is standing room only. It’s one of the highest attended meetings we have each year.

There’s around 34,000 acres of pecans in the Southeast part of Georgia and about 157,000 acres across the state. The 2014 farm gate value of pecans was $313,313,25 and ranked 10th in Georgia agriculture commodities.

Based on the early survey responses, the field day was rated great. Most of those that attended the field day said they’ll be back next year and wouldn’t want to miss it. One question on the survey asked what one would be willing to pay to attend the field day, although there are no plans to charge for the field day. The majority stated they would pay $10 to $20 per person.

There’s a lot of time and effort put into events like the Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day. I’d like to thank Bill and Lewis Parker and Tim Jackson for all of their help. There’s probably not many that would be willing to open their farm up to over 200 guests and spend their own time and labor to get ready for it.
