Short post this week. I’ve been busy getting stuff ready for the Georgia National Fair. Our 4-H kids will be showing their livestock projects in Perry over the next two weeks. If you go to the fair swing by the beef, sheep, goat or swine barns and look for us. The kids love to show…

The theme of hot and dry for this year continues. No rain is in sight. The Dawgs are off this weekend. Peanuts: I know you have to plan ahead and around other crops but I think we’ve been pulling the trigger a little too soon on some fields. Grades have dropped a little. Talking with Dr.…

It’s been a busy week. Peanuts are in full swing. Cotton is cranking up. Livestock show season is here. 4-H judging teams are starting practice for the fall and winter run. It was actually cool when I walked out of the house this morning and I don’t think I started to sweat until lunch. I…

Dr. Lenny Wells has some good information on leaf scorch and water usage for pecans right now. Some of the questions we have been getting about leaf scorch has turned out to be anthracnose. Dr. Wells has some good pictures on his blog to show the difference. Natural senescence has been spotted over the last…

Peanuts: We started checking maturity this week. Early planted April peanuts seemed to be right on target for O6s (140-144 days). Late April planted peanuts seemed a little ahead (134-137 days). The peanuts below were planted in early April and were currently 134 days old. In 10 days those yellow peanuts will mature into the…

Dorian, and it is currently passing through the western Atlantic with an expected turn to the northwest coming soon. This will bring the storm close to Puerto Rico and Hispaniola, most likely as a weak hurricane. After that, what happens is very uncertain. The biggest question is how much of the circulation of Dorian will…

The cornerstone chemistries for whiteflies are still the Group 4 (Venom, Assail, Actara, Sivanto and pre-mixes containing these products) and Group 28 (Coragen, Verimark, Exirel) insecticides, with some exceptions. Both of these groups appear to be providing 2 to 3 weeks of control when put in the root zone and picked up by the plants.…

I worked in the rain this week for the first time in a long time. We even got a few drops in Brookfield. Scott and I took Dr. Emran Ali (Molecular Biologist) around the county collecting water samples for Phytophthora research. He still needs samples if you would like to have your pond tested, just…
