You’ve probably read here or elsewhere about the terrible fires that have been sweeping through parts of Australia recently. The fires have reported killed over one billion animals such as kangaroos and koalas, and I have read awful stories about farmers having to kill their cattle severely injured by the intense fires.  Here is an interesting story about a success story in the firefight–the protection of a grove of rare trees whose species that peaked in abundance 34 to 65 million years ago and whose existence was only recently rediscovered. The firefighters took special efforts to protect the grove of 200 trees from the high temperature fires. You can read more from National Public Radio at https://www.npr.org/2020/01/16/796994699/aussie-firefighters-save-worlds-only-groves-of-prehistoric-wollemi-pines.

Firefighters winched their way from helicopters to the forest floor. The exact location of the groves is a carefully guarded secret.
