Shane Curry talks to pecan growers at the Southeast Georgia Pecan Field Day.

The 2013 Southeast Georgia pecan field day was held in Baxley August 21, 2013 at the Parker Brothers orchard. Over 220 people attended the field day. Topics discussed included, fertilization, diseases, the 2013 season, the pecan demand in China, tree thinning, hedging and transplanting. Dr. Lenny Wells, UGA Pecan specialist, Tom Stevenson with Orchard management services and Shane Curry, Appling County Extension Agent were the speakers. Equipment displays from Appling Motors and Albany Tractor Company were available for attendees to see. Attendees at the event had the chance to win a few prizes. The prizes were Georgia pecan hats, Closer insecticide and even a Yeti cooler. This was the 2nd Southeast Georgia Pecan field day. Last year over 100 people attended and in just one year that number has doubled. It’s amazing to see the interest in pecan trees in this part of the state. There’s already people and companies interested in bringing equipment and displays for next year’s field day. The plan is to continue to grow and make this field day bigger and better every year. We are committed to providing pecan producers with topics and demonstrations that will help their farming operation and hopefully increase their profit. The date for the 2014 Southeast Georgia pecan field day will be out soon. Our plan is to keep it the third or fourth Wednesday of August each year.
