This Thursdays AC Row Crop Weed Meeting marks the end of the Appling County winter production meetings. We are very thankful for everyone that attended the meetings this season, as well as our sponsors for their donations to our programs and projects for 2025, and also to all the speakers. Find in this email the main points from our two speakers, Dr. Eric Prostko and Dr. Stanley Culpepper, UGA Weed Specialists, at the weed meeting.

Main Points from Dr. Eric Prostko
Weed control in corn and peanuts were discussed. Below are Prostkos weed control programs for those crops.
Dr. Prostko also spoke about the importance of preventing Tropical Spiderwort to coming to seed by treating infested harvested corn fields in order to control the spread of Tropical Spiderwort. Below are 2 slides showing the effectiveness of four different treatment options.

Another thing Prostko talked about was the % yield loss from “Non-peanut” herbicides applied to peanuts, in order to know the effects incase a grower accidentally applies a product to peanuts, drift occurs, or a spray tank is contaminated causing peanuts to come in contact with these herbicides. Below is a slide providing this data.

There have also been instances with cadre resistant nutsedge, if this is a case for you Basagran or Broadloom (Bentazon) can be used for nutsedge control.

It was also discussed that Valor has took a lot of blame for what may have been zinc toxicity in peanuts.

There has also been some concern with Brake injury to peanuts. Prostko sees no yield impacts with Brake injured peanuts.

Main Points from Stanley Culpepper
Weed control in Cotton was discussed. Below is Culpeppers weed control program in cotton.
Culpepper reminded growers about the required Paraquat training and in formed growers the training is now available for free on Syngentas website, here: https://syngentaus.docebosaas.com/learn/signin
Also, we will not have dicamba to come clean things up for us this year so lets make sure we use residual herbicides at plant to keep things clean. Below are graphs showing the effectiveness of a few residual herbicides on Palmer A.

Culpepper also did a workshop with growers to assist them in understanding new requirements from EPA.

If you missed the meeting or need assistance for any reason with calculating mitigation points go by your local county extension office and ask your county agent for assistance. EPA’s mitigation menu and calculator can be found here: https://www.epa.gov/pesticides/mitigation-menu
