The objective of this study was to compare the performance of cotton varieties with known partial-resistance to the root-knot nematode to popular varieties without resistance. Additionally, plots planted to each variety and fumigated with Telone II (4 gal/A), were compared to non-fumigated plots. Hopefully, the results from this study will give growers in eastern Georgia better idea strategies to integrate nematode resistance and nematicides into their cotton production practices.
This large-plot, on-farm study was conducted with objectives of assessing fumigation with 1,3-dichloropropene (Telone II) and the use of multiple varieties, to include Phytogen 487, Delta Pine 1558, and Stoneville 4946, which all have partial resistance to M. incognita (Root knot nematode). Two other varieties without M. incognita resistance, Delta Pine 1555 and 1553 were also planted. The study was a randomized complete block with three replications. Each variety was planted to ground that had or had not been pre-fumigated with Telone II (4 gal/A). Using Telone II increased yields in variety 1555 by 112 lbs. The lowest root damage was on the resistant varieties 1558 and 4946, both without Telone. Final nematode counts were lowest where 487 with Telone and 4946 were planted.
The cotton crop was planted on May 30 and harvested on November 16.
