Cold Weather Ahead – Pam Knox, UGA Weather Network Director

I have received a number of questions about the potential for very cold weather and possibly wintry precipitation in the next two weeks and wanted to provide a quick update. I wrote about this in my blog last night so you can read most of it at https://site.extension.uga.edu/climate/2025/01/the-coming-cold-weather-what-we-can-say-so-far/ if you don’t subscribe to the blog.

The short story is that it is going to get very cold around the January 10-12 period with cooler weather coming in waves before then. If you live in a house that is prone to have pipes freeze or have livestock outside that could be affected by extremely cold temperatures, then you will want to be paying attention to your local conditions using a reliable source like the National Weather Service so you can prepare ahead of time. The cold weather could last several days so be prepared for that. We don’t know yet exactly how cold it will get but be prepared for low temps into the teens. In the worst case in northern GA we could even see single digits, but that is far from a sure thing.

As far as wintry precipitation goes, most of the maps shown on social media are just clickbait at this point. There is no skill in snowfall forecasting more than a couple of days before the event. The storm that will be moving through the central US this weekend should bring us mostly rain, with a potential for some wintry mix in the Northeast mountains, but that will not be the last of the wintry weather. Historically, we are near the coldest time of the year, so this is not at all surprising.
