Taking care of the onsite wastewater system or septic system is something we typically do not think of since most of the time it is in the yard, underground, and out of site. Some systems depending on separation distance from restrictive layers or the treatment systems being advanced will require the homeowner or business to be more aware of operation and maintenance of the system as a whole. As such, today’s idea for Septic Smart week is Protect It and Inspect It! and Pump Your Tank! Let’s see what our little detective is learning or finding out today about Protecting and Inspecting the Septic System and Pumping the Tank.

The septic system needs to be protected by using and implementing the ideas presented so far this week as well as being aware of any issues. As Our little detective found out, we should inspect (or have a professional) inspect it every year or so for sludge build up and a rule of thumb is to have it pumped every 3-5 years since that is generally the time solids and Fats/Oils/Grease builds up and reduces the active volume of the tank. But this is only a rule of thumb and should be checked by a professional to determine actual build-up in the tank.
