Here’s a really interesting story about how extreme weather patterns in one area can lead to a catastrophe far away.  We are linked together by the ocean of air that flows around the planet, and what happens in one place can affect things far away.  Here in the Southeast we see this with El Niño and La Niña, which divert the winds that steer our weather around like placing a rock into a river, and other teleconnections can be seen both with the ENSO oscillation and with other large-scale weather patterns.  This is why climatologists look closely at what is happening in the Arctic, for example, because the weather that is happening there is often linked to what is happening in the mid-latitudes.  You can read the story at https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-a-deadly-heat-wave-led-to-disastrous-floods-2000-miles-away/.
