A new study published in 2019 shows that tropical cyclones and hurricanes are strengthening more rapidly in recent years than in previous decades, according to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. A second article shows that the poorer island nations are bearing the brunt of these rapidly developing storms, leading to devastating consequences. Both studies indicate that coastal communities need to prepare for more strong storms making landfall in their areas. The biggest jumps in intensity tend to come in areas with the highest sea surface temperatures, although this needs more research.
