Extension is taking orders for its 2017 Fruit Plant sale through March 8th. Get your orders in early because limited quantities are available of each variety. We expanded our offering to include trees after seeing the quality in the blueberries and figs last year. Download the order form below and return to the Extension office before March 8th. The proceeds from the sale will benefit 4H camp scholarships, Master Gardener projects and educational programming in Cherokee County.

Plants available:
APPLES:
RED DELICIOUS – Fruit are large in size with dark red skin, crisp, juicy and very vigorous growth habits that produce high yields and are blight resistant. Chilling requirement is 800 hours. Climate zone 5-8.
ARKANSAS BLACK – Fruit are medium in size with very dark red skin, yellow flesh, crisp, juicy and ripens late. Tree has large vigorous growth habits. Recommended pollinator is Yellow Delicious. Chilling requirement is 800 hours. Climate Zone 5-8.
YELLOW DELICIOUS – Fruit are large in size with golden yellow skin, white flesh, crisp, good flavor and ripens mid to late season. Tree growth is very vigorous and upright. Yellow delicious has a good disease resistance, is prolific and makes a good pollinator for other varieties Chilling requirement is 700-800 hours. Climate Zone is 5-8.
JONAGOLD – Fruit are large with striped red over bright yellow, firm, crisp, and juicy with a slight tart flesh. Great dessert and fresh eating apple. Vigorous sturdy tree that bears annually. Pollinate with Fuji, Granny Smith or Red Delicious varieties. Chilling requirement is 700-800 hours. Climate Zone 4-8.
YATES – Fruit are small with dotted bright red skin, firm, juicy, aromatic red tinged flesh, excellent flavor, vigorous growth, heavy bearer and excellent pollinator. Originated in Fayette County, Georgia. Climate Zone 6-9
PINK LADY – Very late, crisp with a sweet tart flavor. A good fresh eating apple. Skin is reddish pink over green when ripe. White Flesh resists browning. Chilling requirements 400 hours.
ASIAN PEARS:
HOSUI – Fruit are medium to large in size, brownish orange color, white flesh, juicy. crisp, very sweet flavor and ripens midseason.
Trees have a very vigorous open and spreading growth habit. Chilling requirement is 450 hours. Climate Zone 6-9.
SHINKO – Fruit are medium is size, greenish brown color, white flesh, crisp sweet flavor, and ripens late. Trees have an upright growth habit. Chilling requirement is 450 hours. Climate Zone 5-8.
BLACKBERRY:
ARAPAHO – Fruit are medium in size, good flavored with an average sugar content of 9-10 %. Fruit ripens early over about a four- week period with good yields.
NAVAHO – Fruit are medium in size with an excellent flavor. Has an average sugar content of 11-12%. Fruit ripens midseason over a five to six- week period with good yields. Fruit are very firm making storage and handling exceptional.
PRIME-ARK 45 – Fruit are medium to large in size and average sugar content is 10 -11%. Thorny primocane, fruiting and bears over a long period with very good fruit yields.
BLUEBERRY: EARLY
AUSTIN – Fruit ripens with and sometimes just after Climax variety. Plants have a good upright growth and flower approximately one week after Climax. The fruit is medium to large in size with a good flavor and stem scar. Austin is recommended for home and commercial use. Suggested pollinators are Alapaha, Climax, Brightwell and Premier. Chilling requirement is 500 to 550 hours.
CLIMAX – Early fruiting that requires 450 to 500 chilling hours maturing normally in middle of June. Plants have upright growth habits with more of an open spreading crown than other varieties. Climax has been used for years in commercial, pick your own and home settings. Berries are firm with excellent flavor, good color and a very small stem scar. Suggested pollinators are Austin and Premier.
TITAN – 2010 release by the University of Georgia. Very large berries, excellent vigor, upright habit with narrow crowns. Very firm fruit and hang well on the plant when ripe. They have very good berry color and flavor. Suggested pollinator is Vernon, Alapaha, climax or other early season rabbiteye varieties. Chilling requirement is 500-550 hours.
BLUEBERRY: MID TO LATE
BRIGHTWELL – Fruit ripens in early to mid- June through mid-July. Plants have very vigorous and upright growing characteristics.
Brightwell is one of the most reliable varieties for fruiting as well as having a harvest period of approximately 35 days making it an excellent choice for all planting applications. Berries are medium in size, have an excellent flavor and dry stem scar. Suggested pollinators are Alapaha, Austin, Powderblue, and Premier. Chilling requirement is 500-550 hours.
POWDERBLUE – Ripens mid to late season. Berries are very light blue in color, medium in size with good firmness and flavor. Plants have an upright, spreading growth habit and are an excellent choice for using in ornamental settings. Powderblue is also a good choice for commercial plantings. Suggested pollinators are Brightwell, Tifblue and Ochlocknoee. Chilling requirement is 550-600 hours.
TIFBLUE – Ripens mid to late season. Fruit are medium size with good flavor and an average stem scar. Plants have a good upright growth habit. Tifblue is one of the oldest cultivars that is still being planted having been released in 1955 by the University of Georgia. Tifblue is recommended for home use. Suggested pollinators are Brightwell, Powderblue and Ochlockonee . Chilling requirement is 600 to 650 hours.
FIG:
BROWN TURKEY – Fruit are medium to large in size, copper color skin, amber to pink color flesh, a very good flavor, a closed eye and very few seeds. Plants are very prolific, many times producing fruit twice a year. Brown Turkey is usually cold hardy as far north as climate zone 5 and they are self -pollinating. Recommended for fresh eating, drying, canning and preserves. Climate Zone 6-9
CELESTE – Fruit are small to medium in size, light brown to violet-brown skin, whitish pink colored flesh, a closed eye and very few seeds. Plants produce in early summer. They are cold hardy through climate zone 6 and are self -pollinating. Climate zone 6-9.
LSU PURPLE – Fruit are medium in size, purple skin color, reddish pulp, and a good flavor. Plants are very prolific bearing sooner than most figs and also bearing two times a year. Recommended for fresh eating and preserves. Climate zone 7-10.
MUSCADINE:
COWART – Black; fruit are medium in size, ripens early to mid -season, have very large clusters, excellent flavor and good quality with wet stem scar. Plants are very vigorous and disease resistant. Sugar content 16-17%. Uses are for wine, commercial, pick your own and home settings. Grown best in zone 7 and 8.
NESBIT – Black; fruit are very large in size, with clusters, have high yields and ripens mid to late season. Have a dry stem scar. Plants are very vigorous, disease resistant, and are cold hardy. Sugar content is 16.5 to 17.5%. Uses are fresh markets, pick your own and home uses.
TRIUMPH – Bronze; fruit are very large in size. Good flavor, large clusters, good yields, dry stem scar, ripens early. Plants have good vigor and disease resistance. Sugar content 17 to 18 %. Uses: Fresh markets, pick your own and home uses.
PEAR:
KIEFFER – Fruit are large in size, golden yellow in color with crunchy, sweet white flesh that ripen in mid- season. Trees have vigorous growth and are hardy, blight resistant and prolific. Chilling requirement is 350 hours. Climate zone 4-9.
MOONGLOW – Fruit are medium in size, yellow in color, white flesh, soft with excellent flavor and ripens early. Trees have upright growth and are blight resistant. Chilling requirement is 700 hours. Climate zone 5-8.
ORIENT – Fruit are large in size, yellow with reddish tint, white flesh that ripens early to mid- season. Trees are large with vigorous growth habits and blight resistant. Chilling requirement is 350 hours. Climate zone 5-8.
PERSIMMON:
FUYU – Fruit are non-astringent, medium to large in size, excellent flavor, oblate shape, dark orange skin, light orange flesh and ripens late. Tree growth habit is vigorous and upright. Fuyu is the most common variety around the world. It has many great qualities that make it highly recommended for planting. Climate zone 6-10.
PLUM:
SANTA ROSA – large fruit, purplish red in color, with yellow flesh, ripens mid-season. Trees grow very vigorous and partially self-fertilizing but will produce better when planted with another variety. Chilling requirement is 300 hours. Climate zone 5-9.
POMEGRANATE:
SALAVATSKI-RUSSIAN – Fruit are large in size, juicy, and sweet flavor. Hardier than Wonderful and known to survive temperatures down to 5 degrees. Self- pollinating. Climate zone 6-11
RASPBERRY:
HERITAGE – Fruit are large in size, dark red and very sweet. Plants have vigorous growth habits and adapts well in most well drained soils. Climate zone 4-10.
CAROLINE – Fruit are large with great flavor, everbearing with long fruiting period. Plant growth is very vigorous and plants are very prolific. Shows good tolerance to root rot and yellow rust. Climate zones 5-8
