This week MC Halbrook, Glynn and McIntosh County ANR Agent and Gary Hawkins attended the National Onsite Wastewater and Recycling Association Annual Meeting in Sandusky, Ohio. During some spare time they took the above pictures of Lake Erie. So this week’s fun water facts are about Lake Erie:

  1. Lake Erie is the shallowest of Great Lakes with an average depth of 62 feet. Why is this important? Well, for one, this enables it to heat up quickly in the spring and early summer. On the flip side, Lake Erie can also cool down quickly because of how shallow it is. And it cools down a lot. To the point that it can freeze over completely during the coldest of winters—more so than any of the other Great Lakes.

2. Lake Erie has 872 miles of shore, 241 miles east to west, 57 miles north to south, 9,910 square miles, drains 30,140 square miles

3. More consumable fish than all other Great Lakes Combined, known as the “Walleye Capital of the World” since walleye is so abundant
