Do you ever wonder what is going on with Tattnall County 4-H? Well, we want to “spill the Tea”! Hopefully, our new weekly blog feature will help everyone stay in the loop about the many exciting things that keep us busy in the Extension Office!

Cloverleaf DPA Wrap-Up

We were excited to have 22 youth compete in Cloverleaf DPA on March 11th. This annual competition is a busy, but exciting one for our young people. We were excited to have a large percentage of our students receive first, second and third place recognition. We also appreciate the support shown by all of our many parents who attended the event to watch their students present! We hope you all saw the wrap-up article and the student’s picture in the The Tattnall Journal Sentinel. Also, thanks to Mr. Bradley, 4-H Educator, for taking the lead on this project for us!

4-H Archery Team

Weather has interfered with a few of our practices lately, but we are excited to be kicking off our Outdoor Archery Competition season. Archery team members will be competing locally on April 22 and at the State Outdoor Archery Match on May 5th & 6th. All team members who are 6th grade and older will need to include their Hunter’s Safety Course completion number on their registration form for these two competitions, so be sure you have completed this if you are on the team. We look forward to seeing you at practice on Sunday, weather permitting.

Poultry Judging

Do you love chickens? Do you like to eat at Zaxby’s and Chic-fil-a? If so, our 4-H Poultry Judging Team is a great opportunity to learn more about chickens. Registration will close on April 6th, so be sure to attend a competition and get registered by then. Details on the team are included on the flyer found here.

Senior 4-H Camp & Senior Extreme Camp

Senior Extreme Camp filled quickly this year, before we really even got much of a chance to promote. We are excited to have four high school ladies attending. A big thanks to Canoochee EMC for helping sponsor their trip. There are still spaces available for Senior 4-H Camp, July 3-7, at Rock Eagle 4-H Center. Spaces are available statewide on a first come, first served basis. If you are interested, please visit the Tattnall County Extension Office or contact us at rbowen1@uga.edu for more information on getting registered.

Junior 4-H Camp

Thanks to a generous grant from Canoochee EMC, we have several $200 scholarships available for Junior Camp. This year, Junior Camp will be held at Fortson 4-H Center in Hampton, GA. Fortson has a pool and a mini-farm that youth will be able to enjoy. They will also visit Stone Mountain and the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The dates are June 26th-30th. Parents can register their students online at https://t.uga.edu/8Y9. Please pay the $75 deposit to register. We will then be able to add the $200 scholarship for the first $20 qualifying students and send you an updated invoice. Junior 4-H’ers may also want to participate in the Krispy Kreme Doughnut fundraiser to help cover their registration fees (more details below).

Cloverleaf 4-H Camp

We are excited to attend Cloverleaf Camp at Rock Eagle 4-H Center this summer. The dates for our week of camp will be June 3-7, 2023. We have over 30 students registered to enjoy the event but still have a little room for more. Registration is available first come, first serve at https://t.uga.edu/8Y9. Detailed directions on how to use the online registration system can be downloaded here. Essentially, the parent\guardian will create an account. After creating your account, you will want to add your child(ren) as a member (or members) of your family. You will then want to add the Tattnall County 4-H Cloverleaf Camp to your shopping basket, add the member you wish to register, and check-out. You can pay in full, pay a deposit, or pay your own custom amount. If you intend to participate in the Krispy Kreme Fundraiser, we encourage you to just pay the deposit for now, as we cannot issue refunds later if your child sells a bunch of doughnuts! If you have any questions about the registration process, feel free to give us a call at (912) 557-6724, ext. 0 and Mrs. Michelle can assist you. If this process doesn’t work for you, feel free to stop by the Extension Office and we can help you sign up on paper and pay with cash or check.

Krispy Kreme Doughnut Fundraiser

The long awaited Krispy Kreme Doughnut Fundraiser is finally here! 4-H’ers planning to participate in activities the summer and fall will be out and about selling doughnuts to help raise funds to cover registration fees for a variety of events and activities. We encourage you to support them in this fun and delicious fundraiser. 4-H youth can download sales forms here.

Spring Junior Conference on Jekyll Island

What could be more fun than a Spring weekend spent at the beach with your best 4-H friends? We are inviting youth in 6th-8th grade to register for Spring Junior Conference. Transportation to Jekyll will be provided by 4-H staff\volunteers. The cost for the weekend is $80 which includes most of your meals, lodging, transportation, and a cool t-shirt! To register, you will need to return the form (download here) and your registration fee to the Tattnall County Extension Office by April 10th. Registration spaces are limited and will be first come, first serve.

Kiwanis Livestock Applications Open

The Kiwanis Livestock Project application is now open for any 4-H’er, plus pre-club age children (grades K-4th), to apply! The Kiwanis Livestock Project is designed to provide livestock animals to FFA, 4-H, and pre-club members in the Ogeechee Fair Area (Bulloch, Bryan, Candler, Emanuel, Evans, Jenkins, Screven, Tattnall Counties) based on their expressed interest and need. In addition, this project aims to provide exposure and encourage learning about livestock and its role in agriculture and youth development. Applications are due to Jason Barnes at barnesrepairservice0@gmail.com by April 22, 2023. Applications can be found here.
