My tropical meteorology scientist colleagues have been watching the sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean lately and have been stunned at how warm they are compared to normal. In some areas, the temperatures are at more than 4 standard deviations away from average conditions, which is just mind-blowing in how unusual this is. That means that temperatures in the Main Development Region for Atlantic hurricanes are already at June temperatures, warm enough to sustain tropical storms if tropical waves were coming off of Africa. With temperatures that warm, it won’t take long for the season to start, so make sure if you are an area affected by tropical weather that you are hurrying to get your tropical storm plans for preparing for the storms and recovering from they afterwards ready.
