The yield of this year’s cotton has been all over the place depending on the timing and amount of rain that fell on the fields. According to this article in Southeast Farm Press, spring conditions were so wet in some places that the cotton was slow to develop a top crop. Later, dry conditions reduced production in other areas. Overall, the yields have been better than expected, but many areas had lower than average yields and that brought the statewide yield down overall.
