With Fred and then Grace likely to affect farms in the Southeast this weekend and next week, there are plenty of things that you can do to get ready for the storms. In this case, both storms are lkely to feature plenty of rain along with some strong wind gusts and perhaps a few weak tornadoes. The heavy rain is likely to cause a lot of problems on the farm, including flooding, downed trees, and loss of power. Doug Mayo of University of Florida Extension has some excellent advice on preparing for the weather associated with Fred and other tropical systems that affect your farm at https://nwdistrict.ifas.ufl.edu/phag/2021/08/13/preparing-your-farm-for-tropical-storm-fred/. You will want to keep it on hand because I doubt it will be the last time you will need it this year. If a hurricane with strong winds approaches, there are some additional things that you can do, but we will address that later if one approaches. Having a plan ahead of time is always the best thing to do so you don’t have to scramble at the last minute.
