You may have read elsewhere that extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is a good thing for plants because it encourages plant growth. It turns out that the science is a bit more complicated than that. Some extra carbon dioxide is beneficial, but only as long as the plant has sufficient water and nutrients to take advantage of it. Too much and it hurts the crop just like overuse of any other fertilizer would do. Some plants do better than others do in a high-CO2 environment, too, and in general weeds do better than commercial crops. Increased temperatures also work against the benefits of CO2, decreasing yields and putting stress on the plants.
