Scientific American posted a long and interesting article recently on attempts in New Jersey to deal with more frequent storm surges like the one from Superstorm Sandy as well as rises in sea level tied to a warming ocean. One method for coping is to raise house elevations by putting them on stilts, but often this will not help because driveways and other parts of the lots are not similarly raised. Another method is for local governments to buy out the homeowners in the most vulnerable locations and convert the properties back into wetlands or other natural landscapes. In the Southeast this is likely to be a method that is going to become more common in the future as sea levels continue to rise.
