Atlas Obscura had a fascinating story last year about some centuries-old trees found in the most unexpected place:  growing out of cliffs along the Niagara escarpment.  Because these trees don’t get very large due to their extreme exposure and difficult growing conditions, no one knew how old the trees were until a Canadian researcher collected tree cores and determined that these trees had been growing for hundreds of years, giving us a very long picture of the climate in that area.  You can read more about the trees and the research and see pictures of some of the trees at https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/a-secret-forest-grew-for-millennia-in-north-america-without-anyone-noticing.
