Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer for most people, and the folks at NEEF (National Environmental Education Foundation) have put together a couple of articles describing the impact of summer weather conditions on human health.

The first article describes the impact of extreme heat on human health and lists some of the symptoms of heat stroke and related illnesses.  They noted that “From 1999 through 2009, extreme heat exposure caused or contributed to more than 7,800 deaths in the United States”.  As temperatures have warmed up over time, more people are being affected by extreme heat, especially in cities where urban heat island effects make temperatures even warmer than in surrounding rural areas.  People who work outside like farmers, ranchers and foresters need to take special care to keep themselves cool and safe.  You can read this at https://www.neefusa.org/weather-and-climate/weather/extreme-heat-and-your-health.

A second article described the “Don’t Fry Day” that was marked on the Friday before Memorial Day, May 27.  This article describes the dangers of sun exposure and how you can protect yourself to prevent skin cancer and aging skin.  You can read it at https://www.neefusa.org/weather-and-climate/weather/dont-fry-day.  Hope you took care of your skin this weekend!
