I have spoken to or got a text from many of you over the last several days asking about the current soil temperature. Hopefully we will get much needed rain this week as the soil has continued to dry out.
A good place to get local weather information is the Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network. This is an excellent place to check soil temperature. It is recommended that the average daily soil temperature remain above 68° F at the 4-inch depth for 3 consecutive days and without cold temperatures in the forecast for the next week before making the decision to start planting peanut.
There are many stations located throughout the state for you to receive information – Statesboro has a station. Each station monitors air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, soil temperature at 2, 4, and 8 inch depths, atmospheric pressure, and soil moisture. Data are summarized at 15 minute intervals and at midnight a daily summary is calculated.
