Hurricane Elsa has really thrown a wrench into things. We were finally getting back into the fields when she came and dumped more water. Rain: I’ve really had to brush up on rainfastness of chemicals lately. Here are a couple of the ones that I’ve been asked about recently. If you’re curious about one not…

Pop up thunderstorms have been the main thing this week and there is expected gulf activity next week so well see what happens. Cotton: You may see some aborted squares laying around on the ground. It could be plant bugs but most of what I’ve seen has been due to the funky weather. Cooler, cloudy…

Rain and more rain has been the story this week. This weather is ripe for an outbreak of disease. Peanuts: leaf spot and white mold are active. If you haven’t sprayed your first fungicide yet I would do so as soon as I could get into the field. I would go with something systemic and…

Peanuts: Tobacco budworms have been found in a few fields but the threshold has been low. My count was 1 caterpillar per 3ft of row and we need at least 4 caterpillars per row foot to trigger a spray. We’ll continue to watch for them over the next few weeks. The fields I looked at…

We finally got some rain and I hate to fuss but we got a little more than we hoped for. It has made getting back in the fields tougher but I’ll quit my bellyaching and be glad we got some. Another plus from the rain is that it should help with our thrips problem. Thrips…

Planters have been humming this week. I’ve looked at some 12Ys that have come out of the ground screaming and looking good. Climatologists are calling for another active tropical season. The ocean water is warm so they are predicting an early start to the tropical season. The La Nina is expected to go away which…

Dicamba update: Commissioner Gary Black and Dr. Stanley Culpepper went to the EPA in a hard-fought battle to obtain a Georgia state label for Dicamba however they were unsuccessful this year. They are very optimistic about receiving a state label next year, but we must follow the federal dicamba label for this year. On a…

It has been a while since I’ve done a cattle market update. Record cattle numbers are being brought to the sale which tells us that the US herd is shrinking. Also, the fact that heifer slaughter is trending higher reinforces the fact that ranchers are not refreshing their herds with younger heifers, thus herd shrinking.…

Tough start to the week. The storm really wrecked peanut beds and washed out planted fields. Herbicides: Cotton: Any Valor and Diuron are almost certainly gone. Nothing changes. Stick to the program. 2 PREs and timely posts. Add Paraquat with PREs if pigweed is up. Peanuts: If you have already applied Prowl and you’re reworking…
