Peanuts: Diggers are digging. A little bit of rain slowed things early in the week but has since backed off. The long-range forecast is showing it a little cooler at night and drier. We pushed several fields on into the 145-day range because of the weather but the samples looked really good and should carry a good grade. One good thing about the cooler nights is that it will slow white mold. We have had it in some spots but leafspot has been our main adversary this year. The peanuts that I have seen dug have looked good and much better than I had originally thought. I hope that trend continues.

Cotton: I’ve started to see some fields sprayed and have been talking to some folks about spraying. You can reference the Cotton Defoliation page for a refresher on defoliants, rates, and rainfastness. Overall the cotton crop looks fairly good. The good is good and the bad is bad. There isn’t much in between. The stronger parts of the fields tended to shine this year, especially here lately as the crop has matured. Wet feet and lack of heat have taken their toll but I do think our overall crop looks good especially for the hand we were dealt.
