Peanuts: Peanuts have been moving a little closer to the 140-day range. Several are getting dug around the county now. I have only heard of a few grades but they were pretty good, the lower to middle 70s. Be sure to check dry corners of irrigated fields for signs of lesser cornstalk borers and spider mites. Insect feeding and plant stress can increase the risk of seg 3 peanuts. You may start seeing some garden flea hoppers but treatment is usually not warranted. With the hot and dry conditions over the past week, inverted peanuts have been drying faster. Some have reached 8-10% moisture in 3-4 days. With rain likely this weekend and cooler temperatures on the way this may not be an issue.
Cotton: Defoliation has begun. The 3way seems to be working good. I would probably up the water to 20 gallons per acre (gpa). This will help get the defoliants down to those lower leaves. Another option is to precondition the field. You can go over the cotton with about a 1/3rd of your 3way then come back with the other 2/3rds. But with 55¢ cotton, I know going over it twice isn’t desirable.
Southeastern Hay Contest: Don’t forget to enter the Southeastern Hay Contest. Deadline is September 19th.
