About Georgia 4-H

4-H is the nation’s largest youth leadership development organization empowering nearly six million young people across the United States. Georgia is proud to be one of the largest state programs in the country, serving over 240,000 young people annually. Georgia 4-H provides experiences for young people to “learn by doing” through a variety of educational opportunities. 4-H’ers receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Youth can experience 4-H in every county of the state through in-school and after-school programs, community clubs, project work, and 4-H camps.

Georgia 4-H’s roots have always been in science programming. “Science is the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social world following a systematic methodology based on evidence,” (The Science Council). G.C. Adams’ corn-growing projects with young boys followed the scientific method. Young boys used a systematic method as they planned, planted, and harvested their corn, using their evidence to make decisions for future plantings. Today’s 4-H members participate in a wide range of natural science programming. From robotics to environmental education, Georgia 4-H members have the opportunity to develop valuable life skills through science activities. National 4-H Council also recognizes Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and Agriculture as a core program area.
