Two local cotton plots were planted in the 2023 crop season. The Candler-Evans County ANR Agent Ross Greene cooperated with Bird Farms of Metter, GA and Mark Glisson of Claxton, GA to plant two dryland cotton plots in fields that were considered to be on sandy soils. The objective of these cotton trials is to select some varieties that will perform well in less productive soils. The 7 cotton varieties were selected with this objective in mind by the seed companies to give us a few varieties from their line up that would do well under these conditions. There are 3 replications of these varieties in both locations. Unfortunatly do to extreme deer damage there was not any data collected from the Candler County location this year. It would not have given a true representation of the performance of the cotton varieties. The results of the Evans County location are listed below.

  1. Delta Pine 2141 NR, DynaGro 3799, DynaGro 3528, and Stoneville 5091 were above the trial average in the plot.
  2. Some signs of nematodes were observed in late August, so a test was taken to reveal a high root-knot population of 566 and the threshold for treatment is 100. 5 lbs of ag logic was applied at planting for every variety.
  3. Dynagro 3799 and Stoneville 5091 both have been in this trial for 2 years and have performed above the plot average. Deltapine 2141 NR and Dynagro 3528 only have one years data. DynaGro 3528 was in the plot last year and it was later found out that the seed was contaimnated with another variety in 2022 so this will be treated as its first years data.
  4. Both locations were in extremely sandy soils that were hand picked by soil type and historical records of low productivity. Soil test were done and ph on both field were in good condition for growing cotton. The fertilization program was the grower’s normal N-P-K program that was used across their farms.
