Corn after Corn in the Same Year

By: Rome Ethredge

Second crop of corn this year is a mixed bag in Georgia. In some cases we had too little nitrogen early and some was tied up in organic matter from a tall and leafy first crop. We also had fields where disease severely affected the corn, mostly Southern Rust. There were fields where not enough water could be supplied and the heat and drought affected it severely.

But there are some really good fields too. I was in one this week that I was impressed with. It’s 87 days old.

It has pretty good height (8 feet) but stalk isn’t near as stocky as full season but ok. Some disease but not too bad. This corn has really moved in terms of growth and maturity and has Dented ( Growth stage R5) and is at Half Milkline. So we need to keep it wet and healthy for about 14 more days. Then drydown will likely be very slow due to decreased daylength and temperatures but can be harvested and dried after reaching blacklayer.
