The latest 7-day QPF shows that much of the driest area of the Southeast will experience no rain at all in the next week. If this happens, expect drought conditions to expand in the region. But there is quite a bit of uncertainty with the forecast this week because of Category 5 Hurricane Matthew in the eastern Caribbean Sea. Matthew is expected to take a turn to the north, and much of the heaviest rain you see in the map here is due to Matthew’s current projected path along the East Coast. But if Matthew takes a different path, you will see a much different rain pattern than is shown here. So plan for dry conditions in the drought areas, but keep an eye on the latest forecasts for Matthew to make sure big changes are not in store, especially later in the week.
Will dry conditions continue in the drought-bound Southeast? That depends on Matthew.
