The effects of the rain that we experienced last week are finally helping to reduce the severity of drought in the region. The area of extreme drought has been reduced in most areas, although it expanded slightly in the Florida Panhandle, and most other drought-covered areas reduced their severity. Our next round of rain will enter the region on Friday as a strong cold front moves in through Alabama towards the east during the day and leaves the region by Monday. The rain is only expected to be about half an inch or lower except in the mountains, so additional drought relief will be limited. There was no change in the area of abnormally dry conditions in Puerto Rico this week.
