What do mesonet operators do when they are not out in the field maintaining equipment? Just like everyone else, we go to meetings! For mesonet operators, we learn more about how to measure the weather accurately, do quality control on the data, and provide it to our users in an effective way. This article from the STM Weather Blog describes the national mesonet meeting that was held in Albany NY in July 2025 and what went on at that meeting. While many states do have weather networks like the one we have at the University of Georgia, others do not. Some have the added need to measure snowfall which we don’t do in Georgia, and others have additional sensors or a taller tower to help identify things like temperature inversions that can be useful for herbicide spraying programs. The map below shows where weather mesonets can currently be found across the Lower 48 states, but they also have mesonets in Alaska and Hawaii and new ones are going in all the time in states like Wisconsin.
