The latest Drought Monitor map, released on Thursday morning, shows a broad area of worsening drought conditions in northern Alabama and Georgia and western South Carolina over the last week. A few smaller areas were also seen in the North Carolina mountains and in pockets in Florida. Some areas of Virginia experienced more rain and improved. We can expect to see more improvement on next week’s map due to heavy rain that is expected to fall over northwestern parts of the region for most of the next week (see separate story). The exception will be in southern Florida, which will be missed by the multiple rain events. You can see drought maps at https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/ and change maps at https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/Maps/ChangeMaps.aspx. There are no dry conditions in Puerto Rico again this week.
