A new study published by the Journal of Climate in January shows that based on studies of different climate models at different increases of carbon dioxide, drought is likely to increase in many places across the globe. Even in areas where precipitation increases, the effects of the warmer temperature and associated evaporation and evapotranspiration combine to remove soil moisture, leading to droughts and stress on crops and ecosystems. The story shows that while the Southeast will not see as big an increase in drought conditions are some other parts of the world, we will not be immune to the effects, and we can expect to experience more frequent droughts in the future.
