This weekend is going to bring colder than normal temperatures across most of the Eastern US. Snow is likely to occur in northern locations and perhaps even in the Appalachian Mountains, as it did earlier this week in a few locations in the Southeast. Temperatures should be very cold for May, especially on Sunday morning in Georgia when the cold air settles in and winds are light. I would not even be surprised to see frost in some of the cold pockets in northern Georgia. That means soil temperatures will also be chilly, which is not optimal for planting. But if you have to plant, then here are some tips on what to do from Scott Monfort as published in the Southeast Farm Press. Fortunately, temperatures are expected to rebound after the cold snap, so this should be a short-term setback, not a long-term issue for planting.
