As expected, the moderate drought and abnormally dry conditions have expanded across a lot of the Southeast in the past week. Little rainfall coupled with much warmer than normal temperatures have caused the expansion of abnormally dry conditions in eastern North Carolina and in parts of Alabama. Conditions in Florida and South Carolina stayed steady, while in Georgia moderate drought expanded from 22 to 27 percent coverage. Moderate drought also expanded in Puerto Rico this week. Only Virginia remains free of all dry conditions. With essentially no rain expected to occur in the next seven days and blisteringly hot temperatures expected under the dome of high pressure, you can bet that drought conditions will expand on next week’s map. The only questions are how much and whether severe drought will be added to any of the states. Stay tuned and keep cool!
