Here’s an interesting story about Dr. Brenda Ortiz, a colleague of mine at Auburn University who studies the impact of weather and climate on crops like wheat and corn. She has a new project with several other scientists in the Southeast to study the expansion of irrigation in Alabama.  As the article points out, “In Alabama, only 15 percent of the land currently available for farming is irrigated, a far cry from Mississippi’s 61 percent of cropland and Georgia’s 40 percent. Over time, that lack of irrigation translates into huge revenue losses for the state’s agricultural industry.” You can read more at OANOW.com here.

Auburn University researchers, including Auburn’s Brenda Ortiz (center), are working with other universities and agencies in the state to demonstrate and promote irrigation on farms.
