The Packer noted this week that Hurricane Matthew damaged crops in some parts of the Southeast while leaving others relatively untouched.  Florida crops were not significantly affected by the storm winds, which were lower than expected due to the center of the storm remaining offshore.  Georgia crops also escaped the worst damage, although six inches of rain did cause some minor problems with Vidalia onion seed beds which are planted for the spring harvest.

In North and South Carolina, flooded fields make it difficult to judge the extent of the damage.  However, the sweet potato crop in NC was only about 40 percent harvested and the flooded fields may destroy or degrade the remaining crop.  Other vegetables and leafy greens in the eastern Carolinas may also have been impacted by the stormy weather.  You can read the full article here.
