A recent article on Craftsmanship.net describes the work that is being done by California ranchers to improve carbon storage in the soil of his pastures using judicious application of compost to the land. This has often been discussed but no carefully calibrated studies to determine the effectiveness of the treatment have been performed. If the technique proves effective, it could be used to sequester carbon from the atmosphere and improve the health of the pastures at the same time.
This is of special importance in California where a carbon trading market is being considered, but improving the soil is a goal that farmers around the world aim for, so would be useful in the Southeast as well.
