We held the last of the 2025 production meetings for Worth County producers on Thursday, March 6. The meetings began with the Row Crop Irrigation Management. Dr. Wes Porter, UGA Extension specialist, shared irrigation research and scheduling methods in peanuts, corn, and cotton. Phillip Edwards, SW District Area Water Agent, shared about our water sources and water conservation considerations. There are many methods available that can assist growers in scheduling irrigation applications during the crop growing season. The speakers brought different types of soil moisture sensors and other equipment that growers could view and get more information about.

Following the irrigation meeting, Dr. Bob Kemerait, UGA Extension Plant Pathologist, shared the latest information on nematodes and crop diseases. He talked about the Peanut Rx risk management tool – farmers can evaluate factors such as variety, planting date, row pattern, plant population, tillage, at-plant insecticides, etc.; then by calculating the points associated with those factors, determine the risk level of the field. When it comes to nematodes and some of the diseases that farmers face, the management decision is made at planting. Once the furrow is closed at planting, there is no going back to fix the problem.

We have handouts and information from the 2025 Production Meetings available at the Worth County Extension Office. The Peanut Rx is also available online at the following weblink: https://peanuts.caes.uga.edu/extension/peanut-rx.html
