Regan and I sat through the agent peanut update last week and here are our notes.
2021 Highlights
- Seed quality was good and we had good emergence.
- Good seed quality going into 2022
- State average yeild is looking right about 4280lbs/A
- Excessive rain and cooler temps negatively impacted yeild
- This cause more of root crop and little to no limb crop
- Disruption to blooms during August and September were the result
- Tift County estimated:
- 91 rainy days and approximately 30″ of rain
- 3°F off of average temperature
- Early May plantings of GA06G and GA18RU have yeilded and graded better than later plantings
- Continued to see no benefit of using in furrow fertilizer
- Most spiderwort comes up after June 1st so an april/early may residual will not last.
- Chloropyrifos (Lorsban) is gone. All food tolerances for Chloropyrifos has been revoked which means you cant use it anymore. If you have trouble with southern corn rootworms and/or burrower bug please let me know so we can work out a plan of action.
- Prevathon is now Vantacor, same product just a name and rate change. It still works great.
- Thrips injury is worst at 28 DAP
- There will be a big push for the use of Alicarb (AgLogic) this year. Its a good product and it kills thrips but do know that it does not reduce Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV). Only Thimet reduces the risk of TSWV. The peanuts I looked at this year that were treated wiht Thimet were by far the best looking peanuts.
- Drought during early pod develpment (40-60 DAP) is bad for the plant and yeild.
- Thimet and Velum can give added benefit of leaf spot control
- Fungicides are likely to increase
- Could be tight supply:
- Tebuconazole
- Azoxystrobin
- Proysol
- Priaxor
- Peanut acres are likely to increase. Fertliizer prices will likely push people away from corn and cotton and into peanuts and soybeans.
