If you weren’t at the barn then you missed a wild and fun hog sale Tuesday night. We had several hogs sell for $10-$11 a pound. I know the kids were overly excited. Thanks to all of you who did come and support the kids, they have really worked hard all year on those hogs.
Cotton: Its getting cooler. I have seen just a little bit of cotton left but not much. Unless your cotton was planted extremely late I would probably pull the trigger, especially if you can catch a few good days here in the next week or so. You don’t want to keep exposing those middle to lower bolls to these sporadic rain events. Don’t forget to adjust to defoliants to match the weather. I’d probably go high rate of Prep, increase Folex, and you can probably keep Dropp the same or leave it out. There shouldn’t be any regrowth with this weather.
Vegetables: There has been some purpling on broccoli. Its just temperature related. What happens is that we go through a significant weather change. Say it has been in the 80s in the day and 70s at night, then for a few nights it drops to 50s. That drastic temperature drop is what causes the expression of anthocyanin, which causes the broccoli head to purple. I’ve seen a little bit of Cercospora and Alternaria around but not at bad levels. Cercospora can easily be confused with Alternaria but Cercospora will normally have some white in the middle of the spots.
Frost Predictor: Check out this link below. Click the link and then on the left side of the page click First Freeze Dates. It will pull up 3 maps of South Georgia. The maps give a 10%, 50% and 90% probability of a first freeze. Tift County is currently showing a 10% chance by November 11th. Keep in mind this is just a prediction tool but it could be useful in decision making.
