Finally, some rain came. It brought some relief and a little cooler weather with it. We don’t want it to cool off completely but a break from the 105 heat index is most appreciated. On Tuesday, PhytoGen had a mini field day at a variety plot that they are conducting with Gary Branch. There was a nice turnout and the cotton looked excellent. The storm held off long enough for us to get a good look at some new and upcoming varieties from PhytoGen. We have flagged a few plants in various fields around the county for the cotton blue disease. Our protocol for blue disease identification is to flag the plant and send a map pin to Jared Whitaker. He will come and collect samples to be tested for the blue disease. We are continuing to monitor whiteflies. Every cotton field that I have been in has had whiteflies, however, none of them have reached the threshold. Populations were building with the hot dry weather but the recent storm and cooler weather I hope will knock them down. Peanuts are looking great. Some foliage feeders have been spotted in peanuts so be on the lookout for them. Irrigated peanuts look to be doing well. Dryland peanuts are still looking good but the weather may have set us up for a double crop, so we will be monitoring the maturity a little closer as time progresses. I’ll try and have another cattle report up next week.
